‘Unblocktober’ 2022

October 3, 2022

October 2022 brings forward the fourth season of ‘Unblocktober’: a month-long campaign to raise awareness and improve the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses, and seas. The current statistics for water pollution are staggering, with approximately 8 million pieces of plastic finding its way into our rivers and seas every day.

The motive behind the campaign is to raise awareness for the negative impact of pouring or flushing non-biodegradable items into our water systems. An estimated 48% of the nation pour fats, oils and grease (FOG) down the drains, and around 1.8 billion cotton buds are flushed down our toilets each year. This contributes to the global crises of plastic pollution and foul waste flooding.

‘Unblocktober’ is calling upon both individuals and businesses to commit to not pouring or flushing the following items down your drains or into the toilet for the whole month of October. These items include:

  • Period products (sanitary/menstrual pads and towels)
  • Nappies
  • Condoms
  • Cotton buds
  • Contact lenses
  • Bandages and plasters
  • Dental floss
  • Razor blades
  • Facemasks
  • Disposable gloves
  • Cooking oil
  • Food (even crumbs)
